GAWU SUGAR WORKERS ON SEVEN DAYS STRIKE, OPERATIONS AT STANDSTILL

The operations of Guysuco contrywide is at a standstill after the Guyana Agricultural General Workers Union called a seven days strike following unsuccessful wage negotiations between the union and Guysuco regarding workers wage increase on Thursday.

Some 12,000 tonnes of burnt canes still stands in the fields in Berbice while overall, 600,000 tonnes of canes that are supposed to be harvested in the second crop which is supposed to close off before December, will go over to January-February.

This will cause a loss for Guysuco because the canes becomes overripe and loses it sucrose content, hence it does not produce as much sugar as when it is prime.

The sugar workers are demanding a 15% across the board increase however Guysuco made a conditional proposal that if the workers meet the 270,000 tonnes target then they will get a 5% increase and a 260,000- 3% increase or 250,000-2% increase. GAWU meantime has refused these offers and subsequently called this strike.

GAWU called a one day strike in OCtocer but the workers carried on the strike for more than three days, causing Guysuco to lose valuable production hours even as the rainy season approaches.
