Accidents on the Roadways has been named the number killer of Guyanese but despite this fact, more and more persons particularly children lose their lives daily but nothing can be more traumatising than reliving the experience of losing a loved one during a drawn out court case.
The Mothers in Black Organization of Guyana is calling on the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Chancellor of the Judiciary to look into accident cases that are pending. Presently, there are cases that are still in the preliminary stages for years. One such case is the Trishana Dabydial case which is before the courts approximately five years now. Dabydial was killed on December, 5, 2005 as she was about to cross the Better Hope Pedestrian crossing. A driver had stopped to allow her to cross but the vehicle driven by a drunk driver continued driving and picked up the 13 year old.
She was flung a hundred feet away and died on the spot while the driver attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by witnesses. Trishana Dabydial would have been 18 years old on July 19 and according to her mother Agnes Dabydial, she would have "finished high school, heading onto her career but she lost everything, i lost everything to a drunk driver," the sad and frustrated mother related. The case has been further adjourned to September while the driver remains at large.
There are many other parents Like Agnes who live empty lives after losing their children to careless drivers who ignore the law and continue to drive. The Mothers in Black is an Organization that was formed by Denise Dial who lost her teenaged daughter in 1996 to a drunk driver. Since, many mothers have joined the organization to advocate to halt of the Road Carnage in Guyana.
