A U. S. based Guyanese citizen, who was intercepted by ranks of the Customs Anti- Narcotics Unit ( CANU) at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport ( CJIA), Timehri, on Friday with a large quantity of cocaine concealed in false bottoms of two suitcases, was sent to jail for four years, and also required to pay a fine of $ 10,000.
This was the decision made by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry when the 20- year- old woman made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court One on Monday. Kendrea Smith pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on Friday, September 10 at the interna tional airport, she had in her possession 5.836 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
According to CANU prosecutor Oswald Massiah, the woman is a United States citizen who entered Guyana on August 14 with her 19- month old child. He said that they entered the country with three suitcases and stayed at her mother’s premises in South Ruimveldt.
On September 10 she was scheduled to travel on a Caribbean Airlines flight to the U. S. While checking in the suspected objects were discovered.
The Queens, New York resident was unrepresented, but pleaded with the magistrate that it was a mistake and that it will not happen again.
Nevertheless, the magistrate pronounced the sentence.
