High tide for a second day rose to over three feet and flooded the homes of residents of Sister's village, Long Pond, Goed Fortuin, Goed Intent, Vreed-en Hoop and Versailles on the West and East Bank of Demerara. Many residents are displaced and without food and water while others are planning to move out to relatives who live nearby in other villages not affected by floods.

The tide came in around 17:30 hrs and quickly rose to over three feet by 18:00 hrs. Residents came out of their homes  that were already inundated and watched as the powerful Demerara River water covered the road and rushed for nearby Long Pond- a community located opposite Sister's Village that is lower than Sister's.  A seventy three year old resident when this newspaper visited her, sat in front of her door and cried as she watched the water level climb in her home. She related that in all the years since living there, this is the first time she has experienced something like this.

The overtopping of the sea defense happened because of the High Tide which the maritime administration has predicted to be highest this year. The spring tide is expected to finish on Sept 12 2010.

It leaves behind distress and losses amounting to millions. Persons living along the Coastal Plain are more susceptible to flooding as Guyana is below sea level. Georgetown is 2.4 metres below sea level. Floods are also reportedly experienced by residents in East Bank Berbice and Corentyne.
